Listening to Sacred Movement
By listening to sacred movement, Spirit guides us to our true purpose and nature.
Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!" (Hebrews 12:25, NLT)
Recently, I revisited a novel that I read years ago. I felt secretively embarrassed as I turned pages and searched my dictionary for words I once knew. I was disappointed with myself, but I felt Spirit tell me to be kinder, look up the words, and keep reading.
As I proceeded, I found myself thinking critically and analyzing the author's style of writing. This was done out of curiosity. Intrigued by the tangled story line, I wanted to understand how characters were introduced and how scenes were described.
I felt movement. I felt Spirit. I felt moved by Spirit.
Line after line of the novel hooked me and pulled me back to shore, for I had drifted far from this layer of my meaning. I had lost the feeling of urgency I once had to write, and I took my ability to write for granted. I continued to listen and read.
The more that I had been pressed by life over the years, the less that I could recall or create.
Instead, all of the muck and mire surfaced until it spread throughout, clouding my ability to recognize the movement of my ambitions, abilities, and purpose.
Once I finished the book, I was reminded of the way in which I was once infatuated with words. Some time ago, I existed for them and them for me. So I lay in bed paying attention to all of the movement going on inside of me.
Eventually, I found myself writing in my journal as descriptively and creatively as I used to, but with added insight and more passion than ever. I continued to be in this moment with my pen in hand gliding across the paper in a consistent flow.
I was…happy. There it was again. My ability was present. For once in a long time I openly listened to the directives of Spirit.
This newfound happiness silenced all doubt and inhibition.
How Does Spirit Move In You?
When Spirit moves inside of you, you can’t ignore its peaceful, but forceful presence.
So often we listen to a cacophony of negativity whether it is from within or without. When we lend our energy to boistrous noise on the outside instead of listening to what's going on on the inside, we find ourselves unable to escape a life that we were never destined to live.
Methods used for inner listening will vary by individual because Spirit speaks to each of us uniquely.
You can start by noticing how Spirit communicates with you.
Does Spirit speak to you through random strangers, the sunrise, your work, gentle nudges?
Now think about the things that you have enjoyed the most over the years. Are those things still a major part of your life?
Personally, I have felt guided towards writing decades earlier, but this was the first time that I was fully open to listening to those nudges without doubt and insecurity. I am not certain about the capacity within which I will write, but I am certain that it will be a major part of my life.
Has Spirit been giving you direction about your true nature?
I invite you to start a conversation with Spirit by professing that your heart is open to earthly and spiritual messengers who can help you escape a life that is inauthentic.
Then, allow yourself to notice the nudges and follow them with a grateful heart, knowing that Spirit is present with you at all times.
