Definition of Spirituality

The definition of Christian spirituality is rather versatile.

It is far more complex than being categorized as a less doctrinal form of religion.

Yet, there is no conclusive method of pinpointing what spirituality might mean to a given person.

A unilateral perception this definition can lead one to identify it in terms of spirituality versus religion, but it is more deeply involved than being a concept that directly opposes religion.

So What is Christian Spirituality?

One way to define Christian spirituality is as one's lived expression of their faith piloted by the Holy Spirit with an openness to allow for continual growth throughout one's spiritual journey.

Let's explore this definition further.

A Lived Expression of Faith

One Greek translation for the term life is nephesh (neh'-fesh).

It is an all-inclusive form of the human experience - considering a person's heart, mind, physical body, and inner soul - our total being.

From the very beginning, God intended for His creation to have rich, all-encompassing lives.

In Genesis 2:7, we find the following scripture: "And the Lord God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (KJV).

The last word, soul, is the Greek translation, nephesh. So, by way of divine life (hay), God breathed a compounded form of life (nephesh) into the nostrils of man.

God is present in every dimension of your being - in your heart, mind, body, and soul.

Here is a meditative sequence that can help you to increase awareness of this divine presence.

Holy Spirit as Pilot

If you are to allow the Holy Spirit to guide you, you have to first know that He is present with you.

There are many ways that you can enhance your ability to connect to the presence of God.

According to James Loder (The Logic of the Spirit: Human Development in Theological Perspective), the human spirit innately desires to connect to the Creator.

You come to know your true self through this majestic energy source.

Your openness to connect to Spirit is refined with practice.

Once patterns are integrated into your lifestyle, your conscious awareness increases as you are stretched into your authentic pattern.

Being open means that you are receptive to revelations unfolding in your spirit, and eventually, before your eyes.

Here are some suggestions on developing and maintaining relationship with Spirit.

An All-inclusive Outlook

“Spirituality is the ongoing transformation which occurs in involved relationality with the Unconditional.”

This is derived from Kees Waaijman (Spirituality: Forms, Foundations, Methods (Studies in Spirituality, Supplement 18)) and encompasses the idea of spiritual transformation being an ongoing process in which you engage with a force beyond yourself.

What now?

As spiritual beings, we are constantly learning and growing - especially when faced with adversity.

When we are attentive to grace, it augments our perception of growth. Take 2 Corinthians 12:8 for instance, even when we are in distress, the grace of God sufficiently sustains us - if we receive it.
